There are many similarities as well as differences on how we learned to read and write. Dougles was a slave, who was determined to gain independence; he did so by learning to read and write. He has faced many obstacles and despite his mistress refusing to teach him; he was also a slave. Being a slave meant that he couldn’t read or write and his owners feared this because if any slaves learned, they may try to emancipate themselves. He was taught by strangers and he was forced to keep it a secret. after he learned he became more aware of what was going on and he was able to fake a note in order to become emancipated. We were both determined to read and write; as well as determined to gain knowledge.
