John Steinbeck originally created this story in the form o f a novel in 1937. Decades later, another version of this story was released onto the big screen. Although both The Pearl and Of Mice and Men are both written by John Steinbeck and have many similarities, such as the destruction of the main character’s dreams, their resolutions are extremely different. Although both books have a character who was extremely close to the main character die at the end, the manner of death of these characters are very different. Unlike how Lennie was very peacefully shot and was happy right before he died, Coyotito was killed in a much more depressing way. The death of each character in each novel is vastly different, but they both effectively crush the living character’s dream. Some may say that the resolution of the two stories are the same because a character dies in each, however they could not be more different.…

Friendships are symbiotic relationships, where people share their talents and qualities to help each other through life. The novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, exhibits many forms of these two-way relationships, the strongest, between the characters George and Lennie, and the other friendships between Crooks and Lennie, and George and Slim. These relationships show how each pair benefit from each other’s companionship, and help each other in the harder times of life, the most important one, being the friendship of George and Lennie. The first and strongest two-way relationship shown in the novel was between Lennie and George, who share each other’s talents and abilities to fulfil each other’s needs. George helps Lennie out in all situations,…

Love is a motivation for the characters in both stories and both offer unique advice on how to deal with the obstacles that are put forth by the needs and wants of each individual. The myth encapsulates the impressive, magical journey, whereas the retelling offers a mental and emotional journey that is just as significant, if not more. “The best laid plans of mice and men/ often go awry” (Burns 38). Steinbeck adapted this quote from Robert Burns to write his novel, Of Mice and Men, indicating similar themes such as companionship. Dreams of the characters are also mentioned in both works, along with how they are not achieved at the end. The characters and their personalities also tend to resemble each other between the works. John Steinbeck’s book Of Mice and Men shows many allusions to the poem “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns through unachieved dreams, the characters’ compassion and the unfair treatment of weaker characters.…

John Steinbeck expressed his life through his novels, novellas and poems. For instance, many of Steinbeck’s literary works take place in an area similar to his own home, Salinas Valley, California, an area full of farms, ranches, and orchards (Bloom). Also, California was an area known for attracting farm hands and migrant workers during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl eras because the soil was more nutrient-rich due to its short history of farming (Bloom). This setting transferred over to several of Steinbeck’s works including Of Mice and Men (1937), which is actually set in Salinas Valley. Another example of Steinbeck writing his life into his works is that, as a writer, Steinbeck often struggled financially and was forced to work outside…
