Halloween and Day of the Dead are thought to be similar because they’re around the same time of year, but when you look closer, the two holidays are very different. The Day of the Dead celebrates dead relatives while Halloween celebrates the end of summer.
The first difference is that the Day of the Dead celebrates dead relatives; anyone who celebrates Day of the Dead sets up a shrine for their dead relative (or relatives) so that their spirit can find it’s way back to their family.
