Television shows often portray one or more characters as a hero. When we think of superheroes we think of Captain America or Superman. What about the heroes who don’t have supernatural powers? The television shows Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med both have superheroes but they aren’t your typical superheroes. These superheroes are on the frontline of medicine saving lives. These heroes are commonly known as doctors. In this essay we will examine the audiences, goals, and strategies of these two shows and decide which does a better job of using these elements to portray the better superhero. The up’s and down’s and the good and bad of being a doctor is portrayed. The character Derek Shepard state, “Doctors don’t cry in the hallways, we have stairwells for that”. Through this quote, the character informs that doctors don’t always have a glorious job. It helps views look at doctors from a different perspective while being informed about the medical world. Chicago Med shares the same goals. It is another drama series that follows the extraordinary lives of doctors. If viewers look deeper, they will see that a deeper message lies within. When viewers look deep, they see that the show also seeks to inform. Much like Grey’s Anatomy, it informs about the medical world and the lives of doctors. Both shows seek to entertain the audience while informing them that doctors are true heroes. The audience can learn from the show, therefore; they are being informed. One of the main characters, Will, stated, “I became a doctor to save people’s lives! It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do! I don’t have a fallback plan or some hidden passion. This is it for me. It’s just – no one ever told me there would be this much loss involved.” Through this quote Will informs viewers that being a doctor is great, you get to save lives but sometimes you lose lives.
