While Beowulf the epic poem is an opposing work towards the Beowulf and Grendel on the screen, the characterization of Beowulf in the epic poem is an unchanged person while the on screen Beowulf evolves throughout the movie. The Beowulf in the epic poem is looked upon more as a god, nothing could withstand his wrath when he set his mind to accomplish it. He uses no weapons to get his way on defeating his evil opponents, “...a thane, they declared with the strength of thirty in the grip of each hand" (lines 380-381). In both “Beowulf” and “Grendel,” Grendel is perceived to be inherently monstrous by the end of the novel. However, Grendel was not a monster to begin with, he was simply curious like any other creature possessing intelligence. Grendel’s curiosity allowed him to experience the outside world and foreign ideas that differed from his own childlike ideals. As a result, Grendel was led down the path of insanity, but Beowulf eventually brought him back from his insanity. Insanity in Grendel’s case is not an inherited trait, but instead the logic of an accurate mind overtasked.…

Heroes triumphing over monsters is a major theme in Beowulf, with characters being clearly one or the other. Often, however, heroes and monsters share characteristics, making the distinction between what makes someone good or evil more blurred. They share similarities to show how thin of a line there is between being a hero and a monster, and how easy going down the wrong path is. In Beowulf, the word fire is used to draw the similarities between Grendel and Beowulf, as well as to highlight what makes Grendel a monster and Beowulf a hero.…

In the epic poem Beowulf and the movie Beowulf and Grendel you see a contrast on how religion was seen during the middle ages, and how religion is portrayed now in modern days. The poem shows a great honor and glory towards God, and seen as mockery in the movie. In the Anglo-Saxon era everything was seen as either good or bad, there was never an in between of the both. Christianity was a firm religion, and nothing was ever done to show otherwise. The people always gave praises to God and showed mighty respect for him.…

The opinion of someone can greatly differ from that of another simply because of their point of view—how they see things, what they believe. The monster Grendel is mentioned in the novel Grendel and the epic poem Beowulf, but the character is depicted differently. The two stories have different points of view on the fiend: one personal or intimate, and the other more objective, traditional to a legend. The character differs on the subjects of being loved, questioning the origin of the monster, and being a mindless killing machine.…

The Virtuous Vice Pride is an exaggerated feeling of satisfaction. Some might say that pride is the spawn of an unchecked ego. Others could argue that pride is embodied by the denial of truth, or the expectation of nature to reflect an inaccurate or grandiose personal belief. When nature does not reflect this belief; disorientation and confusion is created within the believer. As the believer tries to reconcile their beliefs with nature’s truths, they can become enraged or empowered and act in irrational ways, often disregarding natural consequences.…

Often when watching a movie based upon a piece of literature there are colossal differences; this is done to enhance the movie for the modern audiences. In the book Beowulf (Heaney, 2000) and in the screenplay Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarson, 2005), there are some character changes that either highlights the character or downplays them from the work of literature. Like how characters are changed to fit what is wanted of them for the context, religion is also tied in to fit the context and to also aid in establishing the views of the author or screenwriter. Time and time again, details are altered to fix the author’s or director's view on how it should be portrayed. When the epic poem and film are compared, characters along with their qualities…
