The tone throughout the speeches can also be attributed to the time the speeches were given, as well as the strategy used to cope and respond to the attacks. Bush used the words terror, terrorists, and attacks a lot to emphasize the conflict with Islamic extremists, while Obama used words such as families, lives, and lost to emphasize unity and hope for the future. Bush promised “to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.” (http://cbcpp.com/202/readings/middle_east_reading.pdf). Bush focused more on finding those responsible and to “win the war against terrorism”. Obama focused on finding peace after all these years, and to be united. He states “… our strength is not measured in our ability to stay in these places; it comes from our commitment to leave those lands to free people and sovereign states, and our desire to move from a decade of war to a future of peace.” (http://cbcpp.com/202/readings/middle_east_reading.pdf).
