Revenge: we all have sought it one way or another, but few of us have wanted revenge to the point where we change as a person all together. “ The Cask of Amontillado,” by Edgar Allan Poe is a story of a man named Montresor who was insulted so much that it pushed him to get revenge on Fortunato in the form of murder. Ironman 3 by Shane Black is a action packed story about the billionaire playboy named Tony Stark who watches his friends, family, his home, and innocent people be killed or destroyed by the terrorist group, the Mandarin, who he then vows revenge upon. Montresor is an honest mason who was respected and honored for his work. Fortunato on the other hand was a wine connoisseur who was told to be, “He had a weak point - this Fortunato – although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared” (Poe 209). Montresor and Fortunato are not the ordinary hero and villain, and the lines even blur at times were the reader does not really know who is the villain unlike the story Tony and the Mandarin. Tony is a billionaire, playboy, genius who has helped save the world several times now. Tony has been stocking up all sorts of different suits so when the next threat comes into sight he is ready to protect the ones he loves, but unfortunately he was caught of guard when his friend Happy got caught in the middle of a Mandarin bombing at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, California. The Mandarin is a terrorist group that at the time had been using untraceable bombs that had been used all across the US. Tony’s friend James had told Tony, “The Mandarin has committed 11 acts of terrorism across the USA” (Ironman 3). This started the anger and rage inside Tony that was finally let out after his friend Happy was put into a coma and his house was destroyed. This anger that Montresor is feeling is more due to his own feelings and reputation, which are more centered on him. Montresors motivation has built up over a great period of time that he had endured until he snaps like he mentions, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge” (Poe 209). This quote shows Montresors endurance to all these insults from Fortunato, but the human mind can only handle so much. Tony had a different kind of motivation. Tony’s motivation involved more people and the pain they felt from all the people who were injured or killed from the Mandarin attacks like his friend Happy. What motivated Tony even more was that the Mandarin had announced their plan to kill even more people, including the president. This made Tony say, “The Mandarin have killed to many people, it’s time to stop them” (Ironman 3). This shows that Tony has to confront the Mandarin now and try to stop them before the go through with their evil plan. This was the last difference that I picked out of these two stories through the motivation of the characters plots for revenge.
