One thing people often wonder, “What should I be drinking when working out, water or sports drinks?”. A study shown that, “In spring 2008, the number of sports drinks consumers (drinkers) amounted to 49.93 million who consumed Sports drinks as their most preferred beverage (drink).” (Sports Drinks 1.) Sports drinks, such as Gatorade, and water, both have many health benefits to whenever people are drinking them. Sports drink have benefits over water, water has benefits over sports drinks, and both have cons to think about too. But which drink has more benefits when exercising, or doing any sort of physical activity?
Both drinks are great hydrators, especially when working out, but water and sports drinks have different benefits. One con that sports drinks have, is that they have calories, which is one reason why people are working out in the first place. Also, sports drinks cost more money than water does and like previously stated, is much harder to obtain than water. One con of water is that it doesn’t contain benefits like flavoring, electrolytes, and sodium. Another con of water is that it can be prone to be contaminated easier than sports drinks are. “The greatest health concern from drinking surface water is its high susceptibility to contamination from bacteria, parasites, viruses, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and storm water runoff containing sediments and pollutants.” (How Healthy 1.)
