Ben Franklin once wrote, “Well done is better than well said.” In simpler terms, Franklin is stating that actions are better than words. While actions and words are both elements that can be manipulated to fit a given situation, one is usually more efficient in solving problems, defining character, and accomplishing goals. In the novels Unbroken and Maus, the actions of the characters prove to be the most vital asset in their survival by helping them overcome obstacles and giving their lives meaning and purpose. For example, all of the accusations of witchcraft in Salem are based on rumors that are spread by word of mouth. Abigail Williams simply accused someone of witchcraft to get out of trouble, but it led to her greater plan of being with John Proctor, a married man. This shows that it didn’t take much work to create a widespread investigation of over a hundred people, and yet the consequences of it were fatal - the death of innocent people. John Proctor illustrates how actions overcome that however because he proves his honor and dignity to himself, his wife, and the people by taking action and confessing to his one-time affair with Abigail Williams. This provided a motive for all of Williams’ accusations and led the people to question the witchcraft trials. Even though Proctor died from his refusal to admit to witchcraft, the impact of actions went beyond his own mortality and saved other innocent lives that were accused after him. Abigail Williams’ words were overpowered by the actions of John Proctor. Additionally, his wife was finally able to see his honor and dignity full restored when he confessed of his wrongdoing rather than him just trying to convince her to trust his word.
