The Outsiders is a popular remarkable novel which describes the life of a fourteen year old boy named Ponyboy Curtis or Ponyboy and his struggles in a society in which he believes that he is an outsider. This novel was written by S.E Hinton. This book is based on two youthful groups, the Greasers, and the Socials (also known as the Socs.) This novel contains violence, humor, and passion, intelligence, and action. Another well-known book is Speak. Speak is a young adult novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson. It tells us the story of a high school student named Melinda Sordino who gains strength to overcome her past and the incidents that occurred in her life. Both novels present the characters as outsiders, or an outcast, meaning excluded from the society.

The author: S.E Hinton portrays the characters as outsiders by describing Ponyboy, and his gang, which includes his brothers and friends as hoodlums who smoke cigarettes, get busted for robbing stores, and stealing cars. They were known to be the Greasers because greasers are people who live on the poor regions of the town. “They grew up on the outside of society. They weren't looking for a fight. He believes that outsiders like him, and his brothers grew up on the outside, they wanted to belong to the society like the others, and didn’t want to fight with people.
