In Reagan, L. J. (1997), abortion was practiced back in the 1880s, but some of the states had banned it and decided to only practice it when it was required to save a woman’s life. Back in those days, it was a lot harder for some women to get abortions due to financial constraints. Those women who were not financially privileged ended up going to incompetent doctors in their area to get an abortion, while those who were financially privileged would travel out of the country to get the abortion done by experienced highly paid doctors. Blanchard et al. (2016) states that women would attempt to perform self-abortions by inserting knitting needles and coat hangers into their vaginas and uterus. Many women died due to these unsafe and illegal abortions.
