When choosing what countries to compare and contrast I chose, Honduras for my developing country and Singapore for my developed country. I decided to discuss crime rates and issues between both countries. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world, according to U.S passports and international travel. Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. I thought it would be interesting to learn why both these countries are so far apart when it comes to crime rates.
Honduras is located in Central America and while parts of it are beautiful, it sadly has a very high crime rate. Some of the top crimes committed in Honduras are kidnapping, rape, assault and murder. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world, with 60 murders per 100,000 people. To give you a better understanding of how bad it is, the national average is 6.2 per 100,000 people. It is advised to avoid going at all, because of the high kidnapping and murder rate. 37 U.S citizens have already been killed. According to law enforcement officials, natives of Honduras often report assaults, and carjacking’s. The criminals do this by setting up road blocks and dressing up as law enforcement officials, when the people driving stop, the offenders assault and rob the people. I personally would be living in fear if I had to worry about getting attacked every second of every day. The government does not have the means to properly enforce the laws or to properly put people on trial for the crimes they commit. There is wide spread corruption within the system, as majority of gang’s rule over law enforcement officials and the government.
