Some Are More Equal Than Others Becoming a leader can be a blessing and a curse. Leaders can use their power well, or it can go to their heads. In George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”, the animals feel that an elected leader is necessary on the farm so they can thrive. During the rebellion, they oust the farmer, who treated them poorly. They choose the pigs to lead them because they are the smartest animals. However, Napoleon decides he alone should be the leader so he uses force to overthrow their democracy. The animals didn't know it then, but Napoleon’s ego and thirst for power would cast an uncertain future on their lives. The role of the leader determines how the farm functions. There are leaders who rule with the mindset that they are better than others, like Napoleon and the other pigs “There was nothing there except for a single commandment. It ran: ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.” (134) The story is also like our society because many people have a hard-work ethic, like Boxer, because they feel it benefits them to help others. “From now onwards I shall get up a full hour earlier in the mornings.” (85). It’s different from our society because Napoleon is a ruthless dictator without the animals knowing. He kills animals and makes the animals think it’s okay. Napoleon is like the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Hussein’s secret service killed 250,000 of his own people, by low estimates, like Napoleon’s dogs killed many of his animals “When they had finished their confession, the dogs promptly tore their throats out…” (84).
