William Golding - Lord of the Flies 1954

William was born in Cornwall in 1911 and died in 1993. The book "Lord of the Flies" is his most famous work, the book was also the start of his career as a writer. He was awarded the 1980 Booker Prize and in 1983 he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

I have already seen the film version of "Lord of the Flies" and I like strong purpose and the underlying message of the fable. To see how ordinary children become rabid wild teenagers, how ordinary children kill their former friends and how fast the man as creature might lose its fundamental values is amazing. Because literature is often better than the film version, I decided to read the book in order to compare them.

Golding seems to want to emphasize island life and the life off the island as two separate worlds. A telling example is when the pilot found dead from his downed plane; How cadets do not understand what happened and why he is dead. I think it gives the fable yet another dimension which I think is positive. In other words, the book describes clearly what era it is set in.

-Genre: Discuss what genre you think the book belongs to and why? What is distinctive?
I do not think there is only one genre in the book. The book is both very allegorical then the whole book seems to correspond to a metaphor of our modern society. In the same way, it is very critical of our own society when including demonstrates what can happen if the wrong person gets power. In this way, the book is also very dystopian as it as said may reflect a negative view of the world in the future.
If you should see the genre more of a fable perspective, it is primarily an adventure story. None of the cadets really want this but it is thrown into an involuntary adventures same second as their plane touches the water surface.

-Relevans: Have text importance today, or is it unattractive for the modern reader? Were you involved in the book? Why? The book is filmed? Have you seen the film? How do the book and film versions

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, conflict - both internal and external - portrays a major development in the theme and plot of the young boys in this novel. On an island composed of only pre-adolescent boys, it is unquestionable that there would be conflict amongst them. Golding blatantly shows the reader the external conflicts that occur between one another, including both physical and verbal altercations. The author also cryptically gives the reader a display of the conflict the boys struggle with within themselves and their own thoughts. Despite the many instances of external conflict, the subtle internal conflicts are much more critical to the plot and overall theme of Lord of the Flies.…

The reason why specific books are included on reading list is simple. Generally literature includes aspects that helps individuals increase their understanding of written works and why they’re important; but to be included on a reading list, a novel must specific meet specific criteria to prove its worthiness.
