Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Slowly and much to my surprise, things started to get better. By day six, I was an expert on navigating through the city. Each day on my walk back to Penn Station, I would take a new route, marveling at New York City’s array of tourists and commuters. After two months, I'm able to brag that I know exactly how many Starbucks cafes there are between 34th and 43rd streets and that Fifth Avenue hosts the best clothing shops.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

The complexity of urban environments is something that I have become familiar with through my time spent working, volunteering and studying in Dorchester, MA – a financially diverse urban borough of greater Boston. Attending UMass Boston while living at home did not provide me enough opportunity to experience the city living. I always drove to campus since public transportation was not feasible. But volunteering at MGH in Downtown Boston and at Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester has prepared me for city challenges like travelling in a city using the crowded local subway and buses while being courteous to fellow passengers, and meeting the time schedules. Learning to travel light and staying vigilant helps me to reach my destination easily…

New York can give us this abstract gift. We cannot see this gift but yet we can feel it. New York is one of the biggest places that I have been in and I never thought that in a big place like this I will find some privacy, because where I used to live it was so difficult having some privacy or being alone for a second. Every step I took the people around me already knew where I would go or what I’ll do.…

However, E.B. White’s writing includes many thoughtful ideas that connect to more than one aspect of New York. By reading this short essay I think this semester will include a lot of analysis regarding New York and how to observe the city better. This essay taught me to appreciate the place I live in because there are so many great things about it. Additionally, by White including the 9/11 attacks at the end of his essay, I believe we will also focus on several incidents that have affected the New York lifestyle. Living through these types of moments are what shape a New Yorker and learning about it will be very…

I experienced a similar situation when I went to New York for a family vacation. It was during Winter Break and we were supposed to be staying for only a week, but with the snow front moving in we extended it two weeks. One day during the first week went to a Mall, but it had Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, and numerous other shops inside. The shops were overcrowded to the point where there was a drastic temperature increase from just walking through the door. I also learned that New Yorker can be very rude at times; one woman all most ran me and my younger brother over with a cart.…

Being in New York City itself was all too surreal, like a dream come true. Buildings raced each other in a quest to touch the soft blue sky and people littered the streets and sidewalks. Crossing the sidewalk into the large park was like crossing the border into another world.…

There are literally landmarks through the entire United States. So why is New York so special?…
