Compare And Contrast Elizabeth Proctor And Abigail Williams

The humble, honest wife, and the home wrecking mistress can be so a like yet, so very different. Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail William’s personalities clash through out “The Crucible”. Elizabeth Proctor was the reason for what happened in Salem. For the simple reason of Abigail Williams wanting her husband John Proctor. While being the housekeeper, John proctor had an affair with Abigail, which caused her to be fired by Elizabeth. This situation was a cause and effect of what was happening in Salem. Abigail was the one that started naming names to Reverend Hale saying it was witchcraft, that there housekeeper Tituba was the devil, and tried to get her to sign in “the devils book” which then caused Tituba to “say name” also. But the difference was the Elizabeth loved him. He was the father of her kids, and her husband. Abigail didn’t care for John as a person she was just sexually attracted to him, she didn’t even know him as a person. Elizabeth and Abigail are alike yet so very different. Abigail lied for her own protection, so she wouldn’t get whipped for dancing in the woods. She lied to put the blame on something else so she wouldn’t face the consequences of her own actions. Elizabeth lied also, but for a different reason, she lied to save her husband. Danforth asked her in the court, “You will look in my eyes only and not at your husband. The answer is in your memory and you need no help to give it to me. Why did you dismiss Abigail Williams?” Elizabeth answered with “ She dissatisfied me.” She said this to not ruin her husbands name in the town. She didn’t do it to protect herself but for her husband. Abigail holds a grudge against Elizabeth for firing her, and for ruining her name in the church. Elizabeth holds a grudge too, but against Abigail for her husband having an affair with her. But yet with their differences and similarities they still try their best to be good
