Final Paper
Edgar Allan Poe wrote his deepest stories in times of gruesome sickness and poverty. Throughout all of his most famous works like, “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Masque of the Red Death”, “Alone”, and, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe maintained similar topics. These topics regarded isolation, depression, insanity, and death. There are many reasons behind Poe’s steady topics, mood setting, etc., like the trauma caused within the series of deaths he encountered between his mother, his adopted mother, and wife in his lifetime. After this happened, Poe dealt with severe cases of depression and bipolar disorder. So, it may have seemed like Poe was the happiest man alive but his stories told of a completely different person.

Readers will find that most of his writing s consist of a depressing mood in all instances. In, “The Masque of the Red Death”, the mood is interpreted instantly in the line, “The Red Death had long devastated the country. No Pestilence ever been so fatal, or so hideous.” Not only does this make the story seem depressing but also seem very deadly. In, “The Cask of Amontillado”, the narrator is the character who makes the story gloomy with his unhappy past and envy. It is explained in the story where Montresor sort of gives the reader a lay out of his life speaking to Fortunato, “You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as once I was”. As well as in the poem, “Alone”, it says, “As other were—I have not seen as others saw—I could not bring”, Poe is creating that dramatic sense of depressing thoughts. Poe’s poem, had its separate way of getting the reader to think more of what he was saying and at the same time, make the reader feel what he felt writing it. Now, in the story, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, there are several different quotes proving this state of sadness. Poe comes off very strong in most of his stories and explains the mood vigorously. For example, “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens”, and, “With the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.” Poe starts to create a pattern shown by the specific words and phrases used creating this depressing
