Comparative Paper How do you measure a human life? Is it the years in your life, or the life in your years? By examining Daytripper in light of the theory of life articulated in American Beauty, we can see that Daytripper is arguing life’s true meaning is found in quality, not quantity. The book is much more about what makes a life than how it ends. Both stories explore the quiet or simple moments that shape a man’s life, and ultimately his death. American Beauty is a story of Lester Burnham, a middle-aged magazine writer who hates his job, and who is unhappily married to his wife Carolyn. His mother refers to him as, “little miracle” because he was born during a blackout in which they thought he was dead, but instead lived. Bras’ experiences many life events throughout his story at different ages, with each story ending in his death. For Lester, he is a forty-year old man who had just been murdered in the middle of his life. By no means is he young but he wouldn’t be considered old either. So, does the length of his life dictate the quality? In the end during his speech he states he could be mad at what had happened to him but how can he when there is so much beauty in the world. Beauty that he was fortunate enough to experience and relive in his finals months and moments on this Earth. Who is to say he would have experienced this if he had lived a longer life because some people never do. The same can be said for Bras’ on several occasions, one of which being in the final story when he is a 76 year old man diagnosed with tumors speaking with his doctor. Bras’ is reluctant to continue examination and even treatment despite his physician saying he has plenty of years ahead of him. Bras’ replies with “they don’t count much anymore when you’re my age. Besides, I’ve lived good life. I don’t want to ruin what’s left of it going through another treatment.” To me, this truly signifies that the life in your years is what truly matters most. You can live a long life but with no meaningful moments, or you can experience a shorter life filled with moments that can be held onto even after
