Antigone and Ismene were the daughter-in-laws of Creon, the King of Thebes. Before the story starts, both of their brothers killed each other in a fight over the throne. After the war, Creon decreed that only one of the brothers would have a funeral and be buried, while the other would be greatly dishonored by being left out for the dogs and birds. Knowing that this would anger the gods, Antigone bravely disobeyed her king and buried her brother in secret. In contrast, Ismene would not help bury her brother and instead tried to convince Antigone to obey the king, and not the gods.
