In the short story “The Sniper”, the narrator tricks the enemy sniper; thereafter, he shoots the sniper and kills him. The narrator had such assurance that he had pulled off a great plan, but that was before he found out who he had tricked. In the short story of “The Sniper” by Liam O’Falherty in the anthology, Elements of Literature 3rd Course, the narrator tells how the sniper wasn’t sure who he had shot, until he made it safely across the street: “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face”.(215) In the short story of “Cranes”, Songsam became very incredulous of the accusation against Tokchae. He soon found out that Tokchae was innocent, and he didn’t deserve to die. Due to the fact that Tokchae did no harm, Songsam felt he had but one choice: to emancipate him. At the end of “The Sniper” he realizes that war caused him to do something terrible: murder his own brother. These were both related to the harsh acts involving their loved ones/ friends; nevertheless, they were both clueless about the mission to terminate the people they know. The main character in “Cranes” is Songsam, a peace keeper who feels like an alien to the town. Songsam changes from the person he originally was; henceforth, he didn't hesitate when he only thought of Tokchae as another man who was going to be punished. Only when he found out he was his old childhood friend, did he realize what he was about to do. Songsam still relinquished the punishment on Tokchae, but in doing this he probably created a muddle for himself.
