Birth control works by preventing the egg in a woman’s uterus from becoming fertilized. However, unlike condoms birth control does not protect one from contracting a sexually transmitted disease. There are also many forms of birth control such as shots, pills, implanted devices that are surgically placed in the body. Despite current research birth control is still only available for women. Birth control may protect against unwanted pregnancy; however, there are many side effects of taking it. Based on the type of birth control being taken will determine the side effects. When a woman takes birth control it alters the way her hormones function. Common side effects of taking oral contraceptive birth control can be intermenstrual spotting, nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, weight gain, and mood changes. Taking birth control not only protects one from getting pregnant, but also can help with acne, ovarian cancer, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
