Community policing is a strategy imposed to create a better relationship between the community and law enforcement. Community policing is defined as a philosophy or orientation that emphasizes working proactively with citizens to reduce fear, solve crime-related problems, and prevent crimes. “Various authors stressed the need for community policing because the police alone cannot prevent crimes and the future of police work is dependent upon public cooperation” (Ferreira). The Police Department is dependent on the citizens because they’re the ones who know it all. Community policing helps builds trust, dependability, and respect between the community and law enforcement. “ This trust will enable the police to gain greater access to valuable information from the community that could lead to the solution and prevention of crimes, will engender support for needed crime control measures, and will provide an opportunity for officers to establish a working relationship with the community” (Miller, Hess, Orthmann page 187). When the citizens build trust with an officer they are more willing to cooperate or give tips about things they know to help prevent a crime from occurring. Community policing involves officers attending neighborhood watch meetings, participating in business and civic events, working with social agencies and taking part in education and recreational
