Compare And Contrast Columbus And Cortes

During the age of voyage, many captains and sailors traveled to the new continent with the support from the rich merchant or a royalty. The captains would then report important factors about the new continent to his sponsor through his letters. The Letters written by Christopher Columbus and Second Letter to The Spanish Crown written by Hernan Cortes are the two examples of successful letters that are written during the age. The two authors share the numbers of affinities in their letters, which they are both trying to please their supporters to gain the support and persuade that this voyage was a great investment, with the different style of delivering and expedition.

During his voyages, he wrote four letters to his supporters. The first letter, From Letter to Luis de Santangel Regarding the First Voyage, was Columbus first and his best voyage. In the letter, Columbus is explaining how he has founded this new land with new materials that could be used for trading. However, he does not just talk about the new land he founded. His purpose of this letter has a business purpose, which is to please the supporter and show that this was a good investment. In the first sentence of his letter, Columbus says “
As I know that you will be pleased with the great victory with which Our Lord has crowned my voyage”, emphasizing that the supporter will be pleased with what Columbus has found (35). Not only that, Columbus speaks of the king and queen with flattering words by saying how they are “most illustrious” who have given him the fleet for his voyage (35). To please them more, Columbus claims many islands and gives the name for these claimed islands. He even names one of the islands to remember the “Divine Majesty” (35) without any objections or any form of documentation.
