Modern society prefers allowing individuals to make their own choices as a result of liberalism. Modern society arose from traditional society. Some would go as far as saying that the industrial revolution was the mark at which most societies changed from traditional to modern. It can also be said that the industrial revolution marks the rise of capitalism which plays a big role in modern society. The industrial revolution allowed for a new quick and cheap way of producing goods allowing for a free market economy to take over. This means that the products being sold by vendors had prices set by both competing vendors and customers. The idea of supply and demand. More so classical liberalism. The same type which Professor Terry Conlin spoke of in his third lecture where he spoke of classical conservatism, liberalism, and socialism. Classical Liberalism has different answers to the seven questions than classical conservatism did. In my opinion liberalism’s answers allow for a more functional society. The first question being “What is the guide to behavior” Classical Liberalism answers with a “rational self-interest”. The easiest and most direct connection between modern society and liberalism in this aspect would be through Adam Smith’s capitalism. Adam Smith believed as previously stated that “Individual self-interest was the basis for economic growth.” With his ideas incorporated into capitalism it can be seen that with a rational self-interest an individual can work hard and achieve what they wish to achieve. The second question “What is the nature of human nature?” as answered by classical liberalism states that humans are perfectible, we want things, are inquisitive, and are achievement oriented. As a result of capitalism and a freer individual, modern society allows people to be inquisitive and want things. In my opinion modern society is better than traditional society, but my choice may be affected by the fact that I was born and raised in a modern society. I could not imagine being in a traditional society because modern society has trained me such that I serve myself and be responsible for myself. I could never be responsible for the families actions, that which I did not do. From observations modern society is the way of the future and me being a classical liberal I prefer change. Traditional society is dying out and is far less successful than the modern society which takes its place. The two societies discussed in the course are different with their advantages and disadvantages. Traditional society revolves around family honors, and conservatism, while the modern society revolves around liberalism, and capitalism. Modern society is the next logical step as it offers the best economy and in my opinion the best social
