The Civil War was a war that was fought in 1861 – 1865 between the Union (the North) and the Confederacy (the South). The two sides fought for years to see which side may take control over the country and change certain things about the government’s policies one of which included slavery. However, both sides had their reasons on why things should either change or stay the same but if they did not have the advantages needed to survive this war then they would certainly be defeated. Both sides needed things to their advantage in order to win this war and in the long run they needed more than just military power to do so. In the Union, they had a few more advantages than the Confederacy did which would help them out in winning the war in the long run. One of their advantages was simply that they had the superior leadership of Abraham Lincoln and the fact that they had a greater population than the Confederacy which consisted of 22 million people. With that said the Union had a pretty strong military. The Union had a very strong navy which included a large fleet of private trading ships. However, the Confederacy was lucky enough to have some advantages that the Union was never going to have. Unfortunately, it was never enough for the Confederacy to win. The Confederacy was lucky enough however to have some really good military leaders which included Robert E. Lee. They not only had some of the most experience military officers, but they also had a pretty big advantage in the war because they were fighting on their land especially since everything happened in the south. Another advantage that they had was that their solders where skilled with guns which made them great soldiers which is what the Confederates needed since they were fighting for
