Roald himself wrote the screenplay with the help of David Seltzer. This film had a musical environment that was not unusual for films that were made at that time. During the 1960’s-1980’s we had huge musicals such as Sound of Music, Marry Poppins, Grease, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Annie, etc.
The most important part of the story is Willy Wonka himself and for this film Gene Wilder was picked to reenact Mr. Wonka (Mandell). Wilder’s character was wacky, crazy, fun, and he had frizzy hair. He was a man that children could go up to and not be afraid. Wilder’s Wonka enjoyed teaching the kids a lesson, but in a way a school teacher would teach a lesson (Otto). It is safe to say that this film is 100 percent family friendly and safe for all ages. The message that Stuart wanted to give was that it pays to be honest. John August wrote the screenplay with the help of the original film and the book. The environment of this film was dark and gothic, a little more adult friendly. Tim Burton is well known for this kind of scene. He is famous for his films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, etc. If you are familiar with Burton’s work, you’ll see that he couldn’t help but star Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Depp’s version of Wonka had pale skin, sleep straight hair and gave a creepier more insane, and paranoid person. His character would possibly even scare kids and is not easily approachable. Burton focused on Wonka’s backstory, giving him more depth and motivation by exposing his origins (Mandell). The message that Burton gives is family bonds and reconciliation is key.
