Take a second and imagine what life would be like without cell phones. Would you be less distracted, more active, and/or become more literate? About 88% of American teens from ages 13-17 years old have access to cell phones and many people are concerned about teens literacy. Many students use their phone on a regular basis and some parents are concerned about cell phones affecting their children's literacy. Cell phones can have both positive and negative influences on teens. In this paper you will learn about both, the positive and the negative effects of how cell phones can hurt or help teen literacy.

Teens actually are reading and writing, despite the fact that they are only reading and writing text messages and writing captions or comments on photos online(Niall Ferguson). People are becoming concerned on potential adverse effects of sending text messages on learning standard english (Hofferth). While students are texting or messaging on their cell phones they start to abbreviate words and phrases, which makes them inappropriate to use in a formal paper or essay. When writing papers or essays, a numerous amount of students are dismissing valuable pieces of english grammar and spelling. Some of the pieces students forget about are punctuation, capital letters, correct grammar, and verbal agreement (Vastic). The article “The Influence of Texting on Grammar and Executive Functions in Primary School Children” wrote that 50% of studies show that grammar abilities show a negative effect (van Dijk). This means that half of the students that participated in the experiment showed bad results, but on the positive side of it, half of the students ended up showing good results. Finding out that 9/10 us cell phone users from ages 12-17 send text messages, Lenhart demonstrates that a plentiful amount of teenage students have access to cell phones. Now that cellphones are relevant, social media has guided teenagers to spend less time on school work, studying, and reading for fun, and more time on their devices (Moon). But it honestly just depends on who you are. There are a decent amount of teenagers whole still enjoy reading for fun but not a large amount of teenage students still consider reading to be”fun” and
