In the years that followed Burke's shooting and after the deaths of Hall, Gilbert and O'Meally, a version of the events at Keightleys in which Burke was killed was provided by another eyewitness, a Mrs Baldock, a maid at the residence. Her version however is not corroborated by John Vane in his narration of those events but the outcome could of played a part in Vane's sudden decision to quit the gang shortly after, and that is that Burke was accidentally shot dead by Ben Hall during the initial attack, as in Burke's eagerness to show the others of his pluck for which just prior to the raid Burke had been jibbed for.
