Studies have shown that in many cases, tap water and bottled water are not so different regarding the health aspects. People continue to purchase bottled water because they believe it is safer; In many cases, tap water is just as safe as bottled water, if not safer. Tap water is cheaper, more environmentally friendly, and as safe as bottled water is. Tap water is much, much cheaper than bottled water is. To put this into perspective, bottled water costs over 100x what tap water costs. Bottled water from brands like Fiji makes tap water seem virtually free. The primary reason people continue to purchase bottled water is because of “manufactured demand”, a tactic used by companies to frighten people into becoming customers of their product. This causes people to spend unnecessary money, when they can get the same resources from their kitchen sink. Tap water achieves the same purpose as bottled water does, simply at a lower cost. While tap water originates from the town’s water supply, bottled water comes in plastic or glass bottles that will usually end up going into a landfill. Tap water has no container and is something that can be obtained easily. The amount of plastic that is used in creating plastic bottles alone is enough to wrap around the Earth five times.
