“I cannot wait until I make it out of here.” I have heard of my friends and family say this countless times during my eighteen years of life. My friends and family were referring to their hometowns. It is common for people in the black community to want to move out of their own community to feel safe or like they have accomplished something. Racialized America has made our own people want to escape their own communities. The most powerful message I received from Between the World and Me was that black people should want to find joy in their own communities and thrive to improve their communities. Black people should want to stay and help better their communities where they can feel comfortable and accepted. Black people often feel as if they have failed and become complacent if they do not make it out of their hometowns. We, as black people, need to take pride in our communities. We should be able to feel safe in our own communities. We should not have to worry about feeling threatened by our own people. Black people are threatened enough in America; the black body is constantly under threat in America and has been for generations. The only difference is the way the body is threatened for each generation. For example, our ancestors suffered from slavery and now we suffer from police brutality. We, as black people,
