A comparison of Beowulf movie to Anglo-Saxon poem
One of the greatest works of all time that arose during the Anglo-Saxon era was that of Beowulf. Written in the old English or Anglo-Saxon language, the poem is considered by many as been “epic” (“a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet”(study.com)). In 2007, Film director Robert Zemeckis, directed Beowulf which illustrated life as been sorrowful, fatalistic, and moralistic. Newton states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Situations that arose during this time (the method of communicating things orally) and the writings that soon followed were no exception to this. The idea of physics and the order of things, the way life and nature itself played out reflects this Law as it is easily seen throughout the film Beowulf and the Angle-Saxon poem. An example of this is seen when years prior King Hrothgar, had been given an offer by Grendel’s mother to birth him a son (Grendel), she promises him all the kingdom and riches of a lifetime. When Beowulf comes in to help King Hrothgar get rid of Grendel, Grendel’s mother promises Beowulf the same. Despite him having saved the village from Grendel years later, the dragon ends up being Beowulf’s son returns to destroy and kill the village people. Illustrating that despite the predecessor, Grendel’s mother is the one to rule the
