Decent Essays
Scout believes that Atticus did not get the man in the corner a chair because he is a poor man from the country. She knows that sometimes people from the country are not comfortable with other people's houses. Maybe this man is more comfortable standing.
Atticus says that Mr. Ewell was a coward and didn't have the guts to go after Atticus himself so he went after his children who are an easier target.
Atticus feels that Bob Ewell has desired revenge against him, but he cannot believe that Ewell would harm his children; on the other hand, Sheriff Tate sums up Ewell as a "low-down skunk with enough liquor in him to make him brave enough to kill children."
Heck Tate understands the truth of the situation, which is that Boo Radley killed Bob Ewell.

Atticus taught Jem and Scout lessons as a father should and answered any question with honesty. In the novel Lee illuminates Atticus’s class as she wrote, “...Miss Stephanie said Atticus didn’t bat an eye, just took out his handkerchief and wiped and stood there and let Mr. Ewell call him names wild horses could not bring her to repeat” (291). Lee added the line to form an indirect characterization about Atticus's class. Atticus was not willing to lower himself to Bob Ewell’s level, the best way to get back at Mr. Ewell was to say nothing at all.…
