A play has three main genres that are wanting to try and catch the audience eye. They are a tragedy, historical drama, and comedy. You are probably wondering what do they have in common? Works of drama are created to have some kind of “result” on an audience, and while the effects each of these plays are considerably different, each play attempts to lead an audience to think or feel a certain way towards a social problem. Newberry college is on a threshold of choosing a play that signifies a strong meaning while keeping the audience amused. The selection they must decide on is “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez, “Andre’s Mother” by Terrance McNally, or “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell. The best one I would prefer that best fits Newberry drama department is “Trifles”. It …show more content…
In this play, Ms. Wright gave up everything to please society, her husband, and her freedom. Mrs. Wright felt suffocated in her relationship with her husband. He kept her away from the rest of the community. She resents the fact that she's not allowed to socialize or even attend functions at the church. The canary was symbolic of what Mrs. Wright was like before her marriage; happy, singing in the church choir, wearing colorful clothes, and yet the canary's existence in its cage symbolizes her life since marriage. When Mr. Wright kills the canary, Mrs. Wright goes over the edge emotionally. The broken cage and the sight of the little bird with its broken neck was more than she could bear. She ended her husband's life in the same way he ended the canary's. In conclusion, Trifles is a great play Newberry drama department should choose. It stills contains a problem today after years passed from the woman suffrage period in 1848. Trifles tends to show that women in a domestic sphere were vulnerable to the brutality of men. As women need to continue to stick together and fight back as well as don’t let men control
