Thomas Jefferson once wrote in the Declaration of Independence: “All men are created equal and have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. The American and French revolution were both similar and different. During the 1760’s the American revolution was formed. During the 1780’s the French revolution was formed. In this essay I will be comparing both revolutions. This includes focusing on what lead to the revolutions and abuses of power. I will also be including the documents and the outcomes of both revolutions.
What were the French and American revolution were caused by? One of the main reasons that the American revolution started was because of only colonists paying really high taxes and their ruler. Britain and the colonies were in debt, so the king decided it was a good idea to tax the colonists even more. The colonists were basically the ones doing all the taxes. The ruler for the American revolution was King George III. King George III was known as a tyrant. He would abuse his power by taking advantage of the colonists and making them pay even higher taxes. The ruler during the french revolution was King Louis XVI. King Louis also abused his power. He also took advantage of the fact that he could tax peasants. He didn’t let peasants have representatives, so when the nobles didn’t want to be taxed, the peasants didn’t have anyone to say anything. Colonists did have representatives, but their opinions didn’t really matter as much as others. King Louis didn’t really know how to rule, King George did, but he was a tyrant.
