Using a series of short stories The House On Mango Street is about a young Mexican-American girl named Esperanza Cordero who moved into a house on Mango Street with her family. Esperanza meets new and curious people living in her neighborhood. There are two characters Alicia and Esperanza who both believed that education and writing is a way to get them out of the neighborhood and into a better life. Both Alicia and Esperanza views on getting an education was repeatedly shown in this book. Through her stories the author suggests that education offers a kind of freedom.
Esperanza believes education will offer her a choice for a better life. Esperanza enjoys making up stories as she walks to school, wash dishes, walks upstairs, and walks around
