The State of Florida mandates that all students in grades 3-10 take the English Language Arts and grades 3-8 take the Mathematics portion of the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and students in certain classes must take End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments. In order to identify and address ELL students’ needs the State of Florida implemented ACCESS for ELLs 2.0. “ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is a large-scale test of English language proficiency based on the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards that form the core of WIDA’s approach to instructing and assessing ELLs in Grades K–12” (Florida Department of Education). Teachers should use the information from the ACCESS 2.0 when planning instruction, assessment, and evaluation of ELL students. Teachers also need to address the WIDA ELD standards based on the ELL student’s English language proficiency level. For students taking the FSA that are identified as ELLs, the State requires districts to offer accommodations. The testing accommodations allowed to ELLs must be appropriate for the particular needs of the ELL student and may include flexible setting, flexible scheduling, assistance in heritage (native) language, or the use of an approved language
