Absolutism & Democracy Essay During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there were two highly effective forms of governments. Which were Absolutism and Democracy. Absolutism is a form of government that can be compared to a Monarchy or a Dictatorship in a way of it being a political party in which there is an absolute power given over others. Absolutism to me was more like a combination of a Monarchy and Dictatorship. Which explains why during that time period people were forced into religion, they had a specific way of life such as the caste system. Including their duties that were mandatory to be attended and done. King Louis XIV once stated, “ The head alone has the right to deliberate and decide, and the functions of all the other members consist only in carry out the commands given to them…” (Document 3). I highly agree with this statement for this time period only. During this time this was the rule of the royals, and also the time where royalty was highly favored. During this time period, many people were believed in Catholicism and were practicing to be a Catholic. Kings during this reign such as King James though that, “The state of monarchy is the supremest thing upon earth; for kings are not only God’s lieutenants upon earth, and sit upon God’s throne, but even by God Himself they are called gods…” (Document 2). He believed that being a sole ruler of a nation made him a god on earth and gave him “... divine power upon earth” (Document 2). In general how you perceive yourself is the way that people will treat, and look at you. How King James perceived himself as a god on earth, that was how he was treated among his subjects. He received a special favors, and was looked upon as the head of the Catholic church. Knowing of his high faith in the religion he made it obligated for the citizens of his nation to convert. Which must’ve been successful knowing he has a version of the bible named after him. To summarize this piece, Absolutism was the more effective government during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Absolutism gave people a leader to acknowledge. More control was created over a country for its ruler also giving them unlimited power. In a religious matter the ruler was treated like a god. Do you think that a government like Absolutism could work in the world that we now live
