Two of the most important Union leaders were Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Lincoln’s goal of the Civil War was to restore the Union, not to end slavery. Although this may be true, his goal, on the other hand had alternated to ending slavery towards the end of the Civil War. To weaken the Confederacy Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in the Confederate states that haven’t been captured by the United States.
