Krebs himself is described as “he did not want any consequences. He did not want any consequence ever again. He wanted to live alone without consequence” (167). He obviously want to be left alone, he does not wants to deal with anyone anymore. The townspeople only listen to him if he lies, Krebs felt disgusted with himself so he starts avoiding people. “Krebs acquired the nausea in regard to experience that is the result of untruth.” (167) “he did not want to tell any more lies” (167). In fact he becomes so antisocial that he wants to stay away from everyone and “not go through all the talking”. Like Krebs, Emily was never friendly with the visitors or anyone that went over “so she vanquished them, horse and foot, just as she had vanquished their fathers thirty years” (83), this shows that Emily is not a women to be play with. After the war he becomes withdrawn from everything and everyone, “during this time, it was late summer, he was sleeping late in bed, getting up to walk downtown to the library to get a book, eating lunch at home, reading on the front porch until he became bored” (167). Everything he use to do that seemed normal became bored to him he had no interest in them no more. Psychologic effect also consist of feelings towards others. His feelings about love change a lot. He actually tells his mother he “doesn’t love anybody” (170, he also answers no to his mother about loving her. Change in belief is another symptom Krebs shows, he mentions how he is not "in his (god) kingdom" anymore. Also, when his mother ask him to pray he repeatedly said "I can't". Similar to Krebs, Emily faced a lot of stressors that can indicate she suffers from a mental distress, she is never diagnosed but details in the story suggest that she suffered from grief.
