Compare And Contrast A Rose For Emily And A Soldiers Home

Nowadays people have different ways of coping with changes in their life. Some people are able to adapt others are not. A person unable to adapt might become a loner. The term loner means a person who prefers not communicating with others. Two stories in which both protagonists are loners is in "A Soldier's Home" by Ernest Hemingway and "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner. The protagonist, Krebs in "A Soldiers Home" faces the challenge of coming back home from war with all the trauma he had to face at war. In "A Rose for Emily,” Emily, the protagonist does not know how to face the death of her father and withdraws herself completely from the community. Krebs himself is described as “he did not want any consequences. He did not want any consequence ever again. He wanted to live alone without consequence” (167). He obviously want to be left alone, he does not wants to deal with anyone anymore. The townspeople only listen to him if he lies, Krebs felt disgusted with himself so he starts avoiding people. “Krebs acquired the nausea in regard to experience that is the result of untruth.” (167) “he did not want to tell any more lies” (167). He rather not communicate with others because the way lies make him feel. His disgust for lies cause him to avoid people and become a loner. In fact he becomes so antisocial that he wants to stay away from everyone and “not go through all the talking”. Like Krebs, Emily was never friendly with the visitors or anyone that went over “so she vanquished them, horse and foot, just as she had vanquished their fathers thirty years” (83), this shows that Emily is not a women to be play with. She is never polite to the visitors it is like she wants to be known as a rude person, so that no one comes back to visit “the visitors stated their errand. she did not ask them to sit. she just stood in the door and listened quietly until the spokesmen came to a stumbling halt.. Tobe!.. Show these gentlemen out” (83). Details in this line demonstrates that Emily stood by the door unpleasantly waiting for them to finish, in order to dismiss them out her house. Krebs suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder, which occurs to people after a trauma or life threatening event. According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, some symptoms of PTSD are change in belief and feelings also social isolation. Before the war Krebs had a very normal life with his colleagues “there is a picture which shows him among his fraternity brothers, all of them wearing exactly the same height and style collar” (166). After the war he becomes withdrawn from everything and everyone, “during this time, it was late summer, he was sleeping late in bed, getting up to walk downtown to the library to get a book, eating lunch at home, reading on the front porch until he became bored” (167). Everything he use to do that seemed normal became bored to him he had no interest in them no more. Psychologic effect also consist of feelings towards others. His feelings about love change a lot. He actually tells his mother he “doesn’t love anybody” (170, he also answers no to his mother about loving her. Change in belief is another symptom Krebs shows, he mentions how he is not "in his (god) kingdom" anymore. Also, when his mother ask him to pray he repeatedly said "I can't". Similar to Krebs, Emily faced a lot of stressors that can indicate she suffers from a mental distress, she is never diagnosed but details in the story suggest that she suffered from grief.
