“The Veldt” by Ray Faullener and “A Rose for Emily” by William Bradbury are both stories with the theme being projected towards social norms. Both stories exhibit people trying to overcome the odds of social norms but ultimately fail due to letting pressures of society as well as their own weaknesses weigh them down.
“The Veldt” is a short story about a family with a smart house that basically does everything for them. The house has an extraordinary nursery as well which the children absolutely love. The children can go anywhere they can think or imagine because of the nursery. It seems like a great thing to have, as well as convenient. After her father’s death she was never able to fully heal with the pain that it caused her. She eventually fell in love with a guy who was in a lower social class than she was. Emily’s cousins didn’t agree with the two being together, and when Emily told them the news about how they were getting married her cousins decided to come to town. Shortly after her cousins arrive in town and they express to Emily how much they don’t agree with the marriage she decides to buy arsenic. Soon after that Homer disappears. So Emily begins doing things to keep her busy as well as distracting her. When Emily dies a skeleton is found on a bed in Emily’s room with a single strand of gray hair on it. “Then we noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head. One of us lifted something from it, and leaning forward , that faint and invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils, we saw a long strand of iron gray hair”(6,6-7) It was homers body. This story’s theme is a prime example of how the pressures of society can affect your life. Emily felt like she couldn’t be happy with her marriage if no one agreed with it, she felt that it was best if he and her husband were just dead instead of having to not be
