One of the easiest ways to connect to the real world is by asking students to create a presentation about a specific topic that they care about to present their knowledge. By doing this educators get to know more about their student and their interests. When assigning a project we need to make sure that the project meets the curricular goals laid out in your school district as well as making the project interactive by sharing with the class or a club.
I really like this idea and plan to use this in my classroom. At the end of the school year we always seem to have a week where I try to find curriculum to teach students as a filler. Instead of introducing new material that is not necessary for that year, I am going to have students complete a project about “Math in the Real World.” In this project students are going to research a career that they are interested pursuing after graduation and how math relates to that specific field. Students will write a short paper on their findings and then will present a short presentation to the class. There are multiple ways to connect students learning to the real world, but you need to make sure that the kind of real world connection you are trying to get across to the student makes sense for both your curriculum and the student. Individuals are wired to see the bigger-picture in things whether it be looking at the whole and breaking it down into the parts or looking at the parts and putting the parts together to see the whole picture. We need to try to shift our teaching and student learn away from detailed-focused to a more bigger-picture approach. Sometimes it is helpful to used detail-focused teaching when learning the fundamentals, but after the fundamentals are learned, we can place more emphasis on the bigger picture. There are many great ways to bring the bigger picture into your classroom that include projects, interactions with others, and looking toward the future.
