As the common saying by George Santayana goes, “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” Despite the fact that history does not repeat itself in perfect sequence, this statement has proven itself to be true throughout history. One particular example in American history is the failure of intelligence in both the bombing of Pearl Harbor, as well as the attack of September 11th on the Twin Towers. This holds true in the failure to anticipate the attacks despite the warning signs in both dreadful occasions. The prelude to Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the threat of Al Qaeda in 2001 have very little in common with one another.…

I can remember 9/11 very vividly and recall my emotions to the event. I’m sure people living at the time of Pearl Harbor experience similar emotions such as disbelief, fear and anger. They were horrible situations in which a lot of people lost their lives leaving the survivors to deal with the aftermath. Watching the news coverage I was alarmed by what I was seeing and felt remorse for the innocent lives lost during this tragedy. During the event I was also proud to see how responsive the police and fire departments were during the tragedy and in the days that followed the media, clergy, government and much more rallied together to for help the survivors and the American people cope and deal with this disaster.…

FDR delivered the “Day of Infamy” speech and Congress declared war on the Empire of Japan all in the day after the Pearl Harbor attacks. George Bush launched the War on Terror and invaded Afghanistan a month after the attack. Both times there was a failure of intelligence about the attacks. For Pearl Harbor the Japanese declaration of war was still being translated and didn 't reach the higher level intelligence in time.…

On December 7, 1941 the United States was forcefully launched into World War II by the attack that the Empire of Japan had set in motion. Pearl Harbor, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, with her blue waters and tropical greenery is a beautiful gem of the Pacific Ocean. On “a date that will live in infamy” Japanese pilots proceeded to blitz the presumed “non-torpedo-able” harbor in a maelstrom pulse of terror. Japanese Zeros with their arsenal of modified torpedoes assaulted, destroyed, and damaged several ships leaving the Pacific Fleet of the Navy crippled. Death tolls rose to more than two-thousand service men.…

As I stepped on the ground of the Pearl Harbor, I realized that , after the attack of Pearl Harbor by Japan, local people and American soldiers used the word “infamy” when they saw Japanese passed by on the street. “Immediately, ‘infamy’ became American code for ‘Pearl Harbor’, as well as code for Japanese treachery and deceitfulness--- a stab in the back that cried out for retaliation and would never be forgotten” (Dower 4). The attack of the Pearl Harbor became the sign of Japanese joining the World War II. The damages done by the attack for Americans were uncountable. According to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the American President at the time, “‘Yesterday, December 7, 1941, - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan’...the United States had never been more united” (Kershaw 375).…
