Comparative Rhetorical Analysis of Erie Insurance and Dom Tiberi share Maria’s Message and Choices: The Dangers of Drunk Driving Maria’s Message public service announcement begins with Dom Tiberi, Maria’s father, describing the general details of Maria’s accident and why he, and Erie Insurance, have partnered together to bring Maria’s Message to the forefront. Using a statistic on how many teenagers have taking pledge to help prevent distracted driving accidents high lightening the importance of spreading the Maria’s Message (Erie Insurance, 2014, 0:00-1:08). The reenactment is done at a high school, with high school victims, and a young girl reading the poem. In knowing that some teenagers are not told about the dangers of drinking and driving, the part of the poem that reads “Someone should’ve taught him that it’s wrong to drink and drive. Maybe if his parents had, I’d still be alive” (2:16-2:24) hopes to relay this message even if the parents don not. Using a poem is more memorable to the teenagers and they will likely remember the speaker’s words as they replay the wreck scene long after the reenactment is over. Using such a gruesome scene will be memorable and leave an impact that will not soon be forgotten. They use fear and empathy to leave an imprint on the high school students’ memories. The realistic accident scene will haunt them making them reconsider the choice to drink and drive. Moreover, the poem relating the thoughts of the unsuspecting victim with lines such as “Now I’m laying here on the pavement, and I hear the policeman say the kid that caused this wreck was drunk. Mom, his voice seemed so far away” (1:24-1:34) and “When I go to heaven, put Mommy’s girl on my grave” (2:11-2:15) is to make the students consider how their decision to drink and drive will also affect someone else, possibly a classmate, and the pain that their families will go through. Showing that the suspected drunk driver survives the accident without major injury and ends up being arrested also sends the message that his life has now changed forever as well. It is left up to assumption what charges he will face, but knowing that he has taking lives with his decision to drink and drive he will be looking at many years in prison. Showing statistics like “Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about one-third of those are alcohol related” (0:18-0:21) is a strong message to show the students that this accident scene is not the only one, but happens all over the country on a daily basis.
