Are we too big? Can we cope with up to 38 million people? Good Morning Tony Abbott and ministers, in the next seven or so minutes, three new babies will be born, two people will pass away, and six people will migrate to Australia. Australia is experiencing a large population boom which can effect our economic prosperity, livability and environmental sustainability. If however managed adequately a growing population’s impacts can be reduced and possibly eliminated, thus providing a sustainable and enjoyable society.

If not attended to properly, population size and location can have detrimental effects on the environment. Under the $2 Billion Caring for our Country investment, a real and measurable difference can be accomplished through better protection, management, healthier and resistant ecosystems. Greater people means greater problems, plans are also established to work with 56 natural resource management groups to institute a National Wildlife Corridor Plan, address air pollution through the National Environmental Protection Measure for Ambient Air Quality, and tackle the issues of waste through the National Waste Policy. The coalition aims to reduce the carbon emissions being emitted into the atmosphere by 2020 through the Direct Action Plan. Also commissioned is a National Food Plan encompassing the entire food chain, aimed at protecting Australia’s food security. Therefore the government is taking action and thriving towards a sustainable Australia.
Conclusion:
Bringing with it many challenges, the Australian government is ready to approach the issue at hand. Its current strategy aims to maintain a sustainable population through skills and education, affordable housing and more desirable services, as well as a cleaner and healthier environment.
