On November 30th, I attended the Mozarteum Orchestra concert that was staged at the Alice Tully Hall. The hall was filled to capacity by people of mixed ages and there dressing code was official. Under the leadership of its English director, Matthew Halls, the Mozart and used conventional instruments a string vibrato, in their performance of Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3. People who were notably present in the live concert were mostly the middle-aged and the elders. This could be because it was being hosted in a church. The concert began with “Melikalikimaka’s” instrumental version being played by a great saxophonist Larry McKenna. Melikalikimaka is the traditional Hawaiian Christmas song and I believe it was being used to set in the Christmas mood. After the instrumental performance, Desmond took over the stage and showed why she was a high rated vocalist in Philadelphia through her singing of “Happy Holidays” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. Back up from the pianist, Tom Lawton, made even the seasonal tunes from Over the Rhine “Snowed in With You” and Styne’s “ Winter was Warm” receive notable appreciation from the audience. Mary showed her creative bit by transforming Anne Hampton Calloway’s song into “Philadelphia in December” from “New York in December.” In performing Frank Loesser’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” Desmond had to employ the service of a lecherous seducer, John Adontes, to dramatize the song. In the dying stages of the show, drummer Dan Monaghan showed how well he can brush the drums during the performance of two holiday classics: “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” and “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” Not to finish without an encore, Desmond performed “Love is Christmas” showing how this season should also be about caring for the wounded too. Mary Desmond was no doubt the act of the show with her versatility and her ability to identify the right songs in suitability to the season.
