Comparative Essay Circe's Power

By nature, every single person ever created was born with different views and ideas. There may be groups of people that agree on certain subjects and ideas, but not everyone is the same. From what someone automatically thinks of when they see a painting to how they interpret a work of poetry. The words, thoughts, and images that come to one's mind differ from the many other people in the world. ☆In the painting, Circe Pouring Poison Into a Vase and Awaiting the Arrival of Ulysses, Sir Edward Coley Burne Jones uses bright colors with conflicting actions, while in the poem “Circe’s Power”, Louise Glück uses the same scenes to show that people have different views and beliefs on situations which together represent the same theme that people are all different in the way that they view the world based on their different experiences in life. …show more content…
Circe begins to show how she perceives the world differently when she says, “I never turned anyone into a pig. Some people are pigs; I make them look like pigs”. One could look at this quote from many different angles believing her to be an evil person who goes around turning men into animals. Circe, however, believes that the men are metaphorically already pigs and that she just makes them appear that way. Circe also states, “I'm sick of your world that lets the outside disguise the inside. Your men weren't bad men; undisciplined life did that to them”. In a way, Circe feels as if she is helping the world. She believes she is making everything right, in which case one might believe she is doing these actions out of spite, but that is not how she feels.
