Joyce Carol Oates and Ernest Hemingway are both outstanding authors of the modern century. They are great to compare with Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a story told about a guy who is nearing death, and Oates’ short story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, a story about a girl who has been thrown a great challenge in life. When aiming for a great story it is very important that authors have a wide range of strong elements to create a better story for the reader. Both these stories have vast dialogue although Oates’ Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been demonstrates a better job. By using crisp dialogue, great character description, setting, and third person omniscient point of view, I found it was much easier to follow the plot of Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been and the story was far more interesting than The Snows of Kilimanjaro. Overall, I enjoyed the story Where Are You Going, Where have you been a lot more than The Snows of Kilimanjaro.

I had a very easy time following their conversations due to the clean and crisp dialogue. Hemingway's dialogue between Helen and Harry is mediocre. Helen is a very caring wife who shows great love towards Harry but doesn't always get the same thing in return. I found that often in the story The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Helen and Harry tend to argue back and forth. After awhile the story becomes boring when the arguing seems to take over. Not only does the dialogue in Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been give the readers a clear description of the characters conversation, but it also really helps to dig out the characters personalities and helps us to learn more about the characters as the reader progresses throughout the
