Community and Public Health Reflection
Public health nurses integrate community involvement and knowledge about the entire population with personal, clinical understanding of the health and illness experience of individuals and families within the population. They translate and articulate the health and illness experiences of diverse often vulnerable individuals and families in the population to health planners and policy makers, and assist members of the community to voice their problems and aspirations. They live in small spaces with multiple families living together. As well as living in small places, they are exposed to chemicals that affect their and their children’s health. Their knowledge of access to health care and services are minimal to none. The community and the public health nurse collaborate to provide education and services to this population.
Of the Healthy People 2020 leading health indicators, the one chosen for my participating family is “Nutrition, physical activity and obesity”. The father, V.M., has developed high blood pressure and diabetes. His wife, S.M., is overweight and loves to cook. Neither of them is active and don’t eat a healthy diet. They have had an economical downturn with S.M. losing her job and V.M. having his pay decreased at his job. There is an eighteen year old son living with them and as they state, ‘He eats us out of house and home.” Utilizing the Healthy People indicator, education regarding diet and how to create meals that are nutritious and healthy for all would benefit them immensely. They were also unaware of the walking paths and bike paths the city had for their use.
Community Nursing Diagnosis: 1. Lack of access to health services due to operating hours and location. (Healthy People LHI,2020)
Interventions:
a. Extend operating hours for clinics to later in the day to enable working adults to be able to be seen without having to miss work. b. Provide a safe location by providing security or
