As I lived in Korea, England, Tanzania and Kenya, I experienced a variety of cultures and languages from different people groups. Whenever I encounter with a new culture, I always get excited. So I desired to study anthropology. As I was researching Columbia community, I found a community program called “Lifeforce in Later Years.” It is a nonprofit organization that helps elders socially and emotionally. Seniors are living witnesses who have gone through historical events, social changes, and various life experiences. So if I have an opportunity to get connected to this community service program, I love to be their friend and talk with them and learn history, cultures and traditions in their lives or times. I believe, based on their stories

The whole book itself is a good example for young students to see how involved anthropology is in our everyday lives. She proves that what may seem to be a very basic culture can have multiple subcultures within them, both being intricately structured. Her countless examples of surveys, interviews, and observation helped me understand how data can be transferred into her ethnography and help her come to more accurate conclusions. Nathans ethnography could be of great gain to only students and professors studying anthropology, but also your everyday American citizen. From cover to cover Nathan provides examples of how the American individualistic outlook on things affects college life.…

Further, Westchester Playa Village is a great organization, but there are some things I will add to improve the service. There may be some limitation for this organization because they may not have the funding, so it is hard to meet all the needs. To improve the service, I think they should provide volunteers with a picture and a brief background about each member, and then they should provide the members with a picture and a brief background of the volunteers. Of course, they will have to receive the consent from the volunteers and the senior citizens that are seeking service before they can send their information. Westchester Playa Village provides volunteers with the names of the senior citizens, but we do not know what they look like or who they are.…

Growing up in a town of about 5,000 people cultural differences were few and far between. Everyone in my town was pretty similar; white, catholic, and family oriented. Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program.…

Volunteering at Wisconsin Lutheran Care in Wisconsin I had the opportunity to observe geriatric care. While the facilities were well maintained and the technology at that time seemed appropriate, the treatment that these individuals received was subpar. The clinicians showed little eagerness to go above and beyond and treated the patients as if every one of them was the same. The patients received no personalization in their care and therefore, I felt that they were not receiving the type of commitment that I would expect from the clinicians. There was clearly a lack of care for this underserved community.…

Part A: Throughout my experiences in high school, I strove to be as involved with my community and fellow students as physically and mentally possible. When I began my educational career at Germantown, one extra-curricular activity that piqued my interest was marching band. Throughout my four years being involved with band, I learned perseverance, leadership, and performance techniques that I will use throughout the rest of my life. Helping younger members learn and grow was a pivotal moment in my life because it made me believe that I make a difference, no matter how small the gesture.…

When I first learned about and became interested in becoming a child life specialist, I started volunteering at Kanagawa Children's Medical Center in Yokohama, Japan as a high school volunteer. I communicated with diverse populations, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and many other populations using two languages, Japanese and English. I started learning sign language to improve my communication skills. I provided activities and play with children, siblings, and families while they waited at the hospital, and that helped me understand cultural, religious, and individual diversity. For example, I implemented origami activity with the patient and the parents from Russia, and it promoted the cultural competency in the hospital setting.…

Four years ago, my life took a path I had not imagined. I was presented with the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and help indigenous Mayans in some of the most poverty stricken regions. Now this may sound like an ordinary service trip to travel internationally and give charity to a stranger and feel good about yourself, but the experience was much more. Yes, I built stoves in homes, handed out water filters, food, chickens, and participated in eye clinics; but the immersion and interaction within their culture proved to be life changing, even despite a complicated language barrier. Like most children, I had many aspirations of future career possibilities such as an engineer or astronomer while growing up.…

Community service is something I have grown up doing. Throughout my life I have volunteered a lot of my time to organizations within my community. I have served at the community soup kitchen, helped young Monett Water Thrasher Swim Team members improve their strokes, and volunteered as a table worker at Monett High School and Monett Youth Club wrestling tournaments. I have always been very involved in helping individuals within my community. I feel as though performing community service as a child and young adult has shaped me into the person I am today.…
