Community Service Passage Analysis

Decent Essays
The Importance of Services passage had some great arguments on why we should serve a year of community service by age 30. They added execellent detials in the passage. They talked about other countries aswell. I just dont agree with everything they said. I feel you shouldn't be forced to do anything unless it's mandatiory. They say all adlults between ages 18 and 30. What if an emergency comes up and you aren't able to make it for communtiy service, what happens? Do they issue out a warrant for your arrest? What if you end up getting sick/ hurt really bad and have to stay at home? It just wouldn't be fair. In passage 1 it says enough pay to cover living expenses. That defeats the whole purpose of doing community service.

In the source, The Community Is Their Textbook: Maryland's Experiment with Mandatory Service for Students, by Suzanne Goldsmith, the question of whether or not community service should be required for graduation is examined. Some raise the concern of it politicizes students, as community service can include protests, petition, making signs, etc. For example, students have positioned for a city to paint notices on storm drains, to prevent people from dumping garbage into them. Although a good cause many are concerned about how far it will go. Another argument, specifically made by a student who is filling a lawsuit in protest of the new requirement, says required community service takes the heart and the fun out of community service, to which…

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

I have completed many hours of community service and I believe that it is my responsibility to involve myself in my community in any way possible. Getting involved in the community helps build a strong character and it teaches certain values that will benefit other communities. Speaking of community improvement, it is also my responsibility to pay any taxes set for me by our state and federal governments. Without taxpayer money, it would be impossible to maintain many of our most precious and crucial government funded organizations. If the American people allowed those organizations to fade away, we would be hurting our country and helping ourselves.…

Should commumity survice be mandatory or opitional? In my position I think that it should be opitional for someone. Most people have jobs that at last 8 or more hours a day, and are tired, that just want to go home and spend some time with their family. In 2009, over 60 million people volunteered to do community survice if I'm not wrong that's a lot of people. And for some people, they are not capable of doing things.…

Giving teens more and more freedom and making sure they could handle it would be great for society. On the other hand, people say 25 should be the age of responsibility, because for most that’s when the brain is fully developed. This point of view makes sense because, “... the prefrontal cortex and other regions of the brain are not fully formed until age 25” (pg. 1). However, many young adults get a job, go into the army and in some cases are already doing well.…

Every male as age eighteen must enlist in the United States military, in case there is ever need for another draft. The draft was used for four American wars causing those who are unwilling to join the military, to being forced into risking their lives. These men just lost their right to freedom, an ideal stressed by the political powers. According to Michael Boldin in his article he states, “Forcing someone to work for the state; forcing someone to kill or be killed; forcing someone to do anything at the point of a gun under threat of prison or even death – Is involuntary servitude. Of all the forms of slavery that have existed throughout history, forcing someone to fight and die in war is by far the most disgusting, and is a form of murder against all who don’t survive,” (8).…

The laws is telling them that they can legally kill someone at the age of eighteen, while they sign up with the military and go to war but cannot have a sip of alcohol. What is most unsafe between having a sip of alcohol and signing for the war in Iraq or being a commercial pilot? Due to this unfounded argument made by the law, age should be equaled.…
